The economical production of mattress cover fabrics on Terrot circular knitting machines

Knitted mattress cover fabrics are gaining in popularity all the time. Due their elasticity and improved lying comfort, these covers are being used on an ever more widespread basis. As a leading manufacturer of state-of-the-art circular knitting machines, the company Terrot offers machines suitable for the production of mattress cover fabrics. On the occasion of the CITME in Peking from 12-16 October 2004, we will be presenting the model UCC548, 38“, E20.

A familiar mattress covering is so-called mattress ticking, a woven fabric tensioned over the mattress to serve as a cover. The circular knitting technique using Terrot machines offers a whole list of economic benefits and wide-ranging new scope:

Universality / flexibility
The patterning possibilities offered by the type UCC548 with electronic needle selection are almost unlimited. This means enormous universality in terms of surface design for the production of attractive cover fabrics. Multi-coloured patterning of logos over the entire length of the mattress presents no problems whatsoever. The machine can be set up to produce a new article within minutes.

Crease-free upholstery fabric
Terrot circular knitting machines for mattress cover fabrics are production machines tried and tested in practical everyday operation, and are available in machine diameters of up to 38“ or 42“. When cut, the extended fabric tube has an open unfinished width of up to 295 cm depending on the article setting. When making up the mattress covers, the complete width of the fabric web is stretched over the length of the mattress. In contrast to woven covers, this method helps avoid the formation of center creases, in particular when the mattress slats are set at different angular positions.

Operating convenience / patterning possibilities
In practical application, model UCC548 offers enormous economy coupled with maximum flexibility. With a system density of 1.6 feeders per inch diameter, optimum operating convenience is assured. Ideal space conditions between the knitting systems take account of the need to adapt a range of supplementary attachments, permitting the production of interesting patterning variants:

  • Quilted effects with weft threads
  • Loop plush with blind needles
  • Patterned or plain spacer fabrics, 3D spacer functional knit goods
  • Matt/shiny effects through the combination of fashion yarns
  • Super elastic fabrics with plated elastane yarns

Large fabric bales / efficient further processing
Efficient further processing at the finishing production stage calls for the provision of large fabric bales in the knitting factory. Model UCC548, 38“ is capable of manufacturing fabric bales with a diameter of over 100 cm. Maximum efficiency is guaranteed by long piece lengths. Fabric bales can be simply and quickly removed.

High production output
UCC548 machines produce mattress covers in one continuous piece. With a mean fabric setting of 300g/m² and a mattress width of 90 cm, up to 20 covers can be efficiently manufactured per hour. This adds up to extreme economy within a minimum of space.

Wide range of application
Knitted mattress cover fabrics offer a wide range of benefits. This is obvious given that flexibility and the use of elastic material serve to enhance lying comfort. The additional scope offered by combining mattress cover materials with spacer fabrics allows so-called pressure points at critical parts of the body to be compensated. By allowing sensitive body areas to be supported without pressure, spacer fabrics can prevent what is known as the decubitus effect – a benefit which is also due to the capacity of spacer fabrics for fast elastic recovery. These advantages have made knitted mattress covers an invaluable asset in nursing applications, for example in hospital beds.

The fabric finishing stage also offers an opportunity to apply additional wellness products such as aloe vera. Antibacterial effects for the prevention of mildew and mould growth are provided by the use of special fibre/yarn blends and finishing processes. The knitted cover fabric is made up in such a way that it can be easily stripped from the mattress core for cleaning.
